i love this router. by far has enough power for any job. the only thing i don't like is that it comes with one wrench for bit changing. It uses an awkward button to hold the arbor still which is great in idea but impractical once you have used the router and accumulated any dust on the unit. It has a slow start which is great. i work as a cabinet installer and recommend this router to all of my apprentices. i also recommend the bosch 1-1/2 horse power trim router for tighter quarters.
This is my 5th Porter Cable router.
Finally they have a spindle lock... I think.
Thank God they still have 2 lock nuts on the collets, because the spindle lock pin broke off after a bit was over tightened some and seized in the new collet.
Maybe thats my fault but I wished the spindle pin was beefier, because I won't be alone with this issue.
I am used to the 2 wrench system, so it's not a BIG deal here, and the tool is perfect with out it. Would be 5 stars except for the spindle lock breaking.
Still it's a great kit, including the guide and above table adjuster, which have been used and accepted as designed.
The motor drove a large panel bit thru MDF door panels, at 10800 rpm, with no issue or groan at all.

I am a retired school shop teacher and had three Porter-cable 690 1 ¾ hp fixed speed routers in my shop. Each was used extensively in a router table by students. These three routers held up for over 20 years and where still in very good shape when I retired. I needed a new router for my home shop so I thought that the 890 2 ¼ hp would be a step up from the 690 and it had a better adjusting mechanism, which was advertised as good for use in a router table.
I would not recommend getting an 890 series router for use in a router table. I have had two new 890 routers and one rebuilt one burn up on me doing exactly the same operations that my students and I had done for years with the 690. The first one burnt up while using a raised panel bit on MDF; hard stuff but nothing that had not been done before with the 690. I needed to get the job done so I ran out a bought another one thinking maybe I just got a lemon or I had overloaded it by feeding too fast. I finished the job but took three passes just to be careful. Later I took the other one in and got it repaired one month out of warrantee, but they covered it. I now had two routers on hand; ok that might be handy.
I used them for various task with no problems even routing over 300 foot of 1/2 by 3/8 fluting in MDF in one afternoon. Then months later a friend needed help with a project. I used the new router to make 3/8 by 1/2 inch grooves in 3 foot long pieces of cherry. I got through the first piece and halfway through the second and the router started to smoke then lost power. I setup the rebuilt router and finished the cut then reduced the cut depth to 1/4 to make multiple passes for the remaining pieces but it burnt up before the job was done. The bit was a new carbide bit and I even went extra slow on the second router.
I think the problem is the electronic speed control; it tries to maintain the same speed no matter what the load. The operator can not listen to the motor to determine if he should change his feed rate and before you know it the motor has over heated. I would take a 690 router over an 890 router any day.
this is by far the best router on the market for the price. PC stood up with their excellent engineering. lots of power in this router. the micro fine adjustment from above in the router table is just super. the edge guid works really well with this router combo as well. all in all its a very good router and i would recommend this router to anyone.
I bought the 895 when they first came out several years ago. In that time I've used it quite a bit and the following are my impressions.
The bottom line is it's not worth the price they're asking these days ($280).
The positives; 1)soft start - no jerking on start-up, 2) high/low switch - you can sit it down on it's top and it will turn off leaving you free to keep both hands on the router, 3) strong motor - I have rarely been able to bog the motor down, 4) above the table height adjustment - (this is only a minor positive) - given the high cost of aftermarket router lifts this gets a + mark for it's crude yet convenient adjustment.
The negatives; 1) the plunge base is JUNK - the old style base (pictured above but I understand they've redesigned it now) sticks all the time, loses it's depth setting repeatedly, and the sub-base isn't flat, 2) above the table height ajustment - I know I listed this as a positive but it's also a negative - it's very crude and the bit moves when you lock in the setting, 3) the plunge base is JUNK, 4) both bases are cheaply made (however the motor seems solid), 5) did I mention the plunge base s JUNK?
I think this is a good table router if you have an aftermarket router lift, otherwise I would recommend going with another brand for an all purpose router.
I purchased the 895PK approximately 20 months ago through Amazon. The above the table bit changing and height adjustment along with the Porter Cable name were the main factors in the purchase. I mounted it in my homemade router table hanging off the right end of my table saw in a Rousseau plate.
Initially it was everything I hoped for. Then the following occurred: 1) the motor recall (just took awhile); 2) the spindle lock broke (repaired but still doesn't work - now using a bent wrench with the standard wrench); 3) Height adjustment rack broke in half and the small screws that hold it to the motor stripped out (bought new screws at the hardware store and holding rack pieces in place - waiting for it to break completely); 4) Adjustment Clamp came apart, affecting above table adjustment (tightened and pressed adjustment bit back into clamp assembly).
The motor has been great. The above table height adjustment works. I've had no problem with the plunge router, but have used it very little. The service center is about an hour away. I find myself wondering if I should have purchased a quality router lift along with the motor.
came out of the top within one hour's use. They call it a 2-1/4 HP router, but it doesn't have the guts of the classic PC 1-3/4. Between going to buy it, and driving back to return it, I spent more time on the road than the router lasted. I'll rate this a one, because I can't rate it negative 4.
I would like to say that I'm related to the Porter side of the company but I'm not. However, there are some things this company does well and making routers is one of them. I purchased this kit from Amazon a couple of years ago after doing a bit of research. It has not disappointed me. The soft start is a nice feature so as to not make it jerk in your hand when starting up. It also runs quieter than my old router.
Both bases work very well. I mostly use the fixed base in a Bench Dog router table to make cabinet doors and such. The plunge base works smoothly too when whatever I'm doing calls for it. I have not experienced the plunge base giving me any problems as some of the other reviewers have stated.
The motor is plenty powerful. It has never bogged down on me even when I've run maple or oak through it.
There are only a couple of things that I have had any difficulty with. When I'm using the fixed base in the router table, saw dust can collect between the motor unit and the base making it sometimes difficult to remove the motor unit from the base. Dust collection needs to be running at 100% to keep this from becoming an issue.
The other minor complaint I have is that the spindle lock doen't fully engage unless the motor unit is forced into position. It can sometimes be difficult to release the spindle lock from that position too.
These two "issues" are not severe enough for me to rate it 4 stars. I'd give it 4.8 if that was an option.
I had and still have a Mikita 1 1/4 router but wanted to upgrade. Saw this kit since I wanted both a fixed and plung router. I use the fixed base on my P/C router table. I have been milling my own wood trim for my house, and have no problem with it bogging down on me. I have been using white ash and the veriable speed is very helpful. So far the only thing that I have had a problem with is I have to replace the switch on my router table, but I bought that 7yrs ago, and it just went out on me last week.
I returned this due to many additive problems. Fortunately, Amazon refunded me because PC customer service just sent canned "Thank you - won't help you" messages. PC quality is sinking.
1) cheap plastic parts on bases - plunge base pointer broke on first use. You can't read the scale anyway because of how they positioned the knob.
2) cheap metal and screws. Two screws about 1/8" long w/maybe 3 threads hold the height adjustment rack to the machine body. These fall out and quickly strip both themselves and the body when you try to re-attach the rack - something I had to do with each use in a router table. What are they thinking? These tiny screws have to support the entire weight of the router when mounted on a table and the clamp is loosened to perform height adjustments.
3) Poorly machined base plate holes. Base barely fits standard jigs for PC routers (no problem with PC 690) because they are machined enough out of alignment to require a forced fit. You could tell this would lead to more thread stripping in no time.
4) Plunge mechanism was very stiff and almost useless. Did not improve with use.
5) For me - 4 hour one-way drive to service recall - no other way offered to accommodate.
The motor seemed decent and I tried to overlook the above until the metal began stripping in less than two months of use. I think PC is economizing on bases and cheaper manufacturing processes. By the way, this is the first tool I've returned in 20 years and own many other PC tools without complaint. Maybe I got a bad apple, but others here have similar experience with this model.
