I got this machine in the post today UPS delivered, no obvious damage on the box, but when I turned it on, it was quite loud and odd sounding. Since some of the reviewers said that it was loud I wasn't too worried, but when 60 min had passed and my Frozen Strawberry yogurt still was 50deg F, I was concerned. Then I was more concerned when it had an ozone kind of smell coming from the vent. Got my tools, and pried out the little round caps in the bottom of the sides, took the top off, and saw that the fan bracket was causing the fan to ground out against the side of the machine. It looks like this is *very* easy to happen during shipping. I removed the fan bracket with two small philips screws, bent it back a bit, put a washer under it, and screwed it back in. 60 min later I have super Frozen Yogurt.
I don't know where the idea that you have to keep it upright for 24hours comes from. Its just a little fridge compressor expansion thingy, and coil, and a fan. I used it after I fixed the fan right off and it was fine.
Product inside the case is simple, and looks pretty sturdy. Fan was a typical AC unit (hard to break) and AC unit looked rugged.
I like that the blades will reverse direction if impeded (by nut or something in your mix.) It seems that the unit that drives the blades operates with a mechanical type safety. I like this design.
I took one start off for the fan being easy to damage in shipping, and one star off for the seemingly fragile blade/cover setup which seems tricky.
Here's my Strawberry frozen delight.
2 cups fresh roadside strawberries
2 &1/2 cups plain yogurt
1/4 cup cream
1 tblsp vannilla
6 tblsp lime juice
1 &1/4 cup milk
I have had this machine for about a year now. I make ice cream at least twice a week. It is fast and not to loud. I make my own diet ice creams and ices. The only thing I do is spray the bowl with a little Pam. I don't use alot of cream in my ices and this helps with the mixtures not freezing from the bottom causing the paddle to lift up which will stop the chruning. Easy to clean.
Makes perfect batches of ice cream, consistently each time. I used to have a cheaper pre-freeze bowl model, and ice cream would always come out inconsistently, a lot of times too watery, and if you made a mistake, you had to re-freeze the bowl and start over. Good for bbq's b/c you can make batch after batch, just make sure you make all the ice-cream mixes beforehand. A bit pricey, yes, but you get what you pay for, excellent machine, would definitely recommend.
I bought this as a gift for a friend, after returning 2 defective units of another brand. They love this one.
I bought this as a gift for a someone who considers himself an expert on ice cream making. Needless to say this was a great hit. The ice cream was so delicious and it took no time at all to whip up a batch. I thought I would have to pay a lot more to get the quality that we did.
Solid feel and good finish on this machine. Performs well, and is able to make better sorbets and ice-creams than old-style maker with ice and rock salt. Batch size is reasonable, and can make several batches back-to back just fine. Only real downside is the noise - agin, quiter than our ice-and-rck salt machine, but still quite noisy. Overall, very happy with this machine to date, but might just want to put in closet/garage/bathroom while its running.
I bought this machine earlier this year because I was tired of using freezer space to keep canisters for the cheaper model frozen (and half the time they didn't freeze). What a mistake. This is a giant waste of money and a reminder that Cuinsinart isn't what it once was (in less than six months I had to replace parts on a new 14-cup food processor). Time and again the ice cream on the outside freezes, meaning the blade stops turning and most of the "ice cream" is soup. It doesn't matter what the recipe is, btw. I e-mailed Cuisinart two months ago (another company that doesn't want to hear from consumers -- check out the web site) and naturally haven't heard back. Sadly, I didn't keep the box so I could just return the whole thing. I haven't yet talked myself into the $700 Italian ice cream maker -- I'm not a professional chef -- but urge anyone thinking about this product to think again.
If your time is short, and whose isn't, then this is the machine for your homemade ice cream. Follow the directions, add ingredients, eat ice cream in one hour. Easy clean up. Up side, we now begin to experiment. Down side, the machine is heavy for the wife to put away. I built a special little table to store off the pantry floor.
We purchased this ice cream maker, along with two ice cream cookbooks (see links, below), as a gift to our lactose intolerent, and otherwise allergic, grandchildren. Their Mom reports that the ice cream produced is wonderful, easily made, and satisfying to all. I'm making a batch of ice cream right now and I can't help but think what a miserable product this is. My wife purchased the Cuisinart Supreme Commercial Quality Ice Cream Maker for me as a gift for Christmas 2007 and I use it two to three times a month. Either Cuisinart's definition of commercial quality is different than mine or their standards have slipped considerably.
I started making ice cream in January and after 4 batches the motor arm burned out. I called Cuisinart's Customer Service and at first they suggested I disassemble the motor arm. I asked if this would void my warranty and was put on hold. When the agent came back she told me they would ship a replacement which arrived about 10 days later.
In June, the timer dial stopped working. It still turns the machine on but it doesn't keep time and turning it manually to Off doesn't stop the churn. I have to unplug the ice cream maker and remove the motor arm.
I assume that when I call Cuisinart again they'll either repair or replace the machine but it means paying $10 for shipping and handling and I'll be without my ice cream maker until they return it.
The Cuisinart Supreme Commercial Quality Ice Cream Maker gets 1 star from me because it does make good ice cream but the quality of this product is terrible. I expected more from Cuisinart.
